1939 Compound (back)

"It’s undoubtedly historic, yet not uniformly pristine thanks to what Broughton calls 'an interesting pattern of opulence, decline, and infill.' Her project continues this idiosyncratic local heritage, as well as LA’s rich legacy of architects’ own unorthodox homes."
-Jessica Ritz, Architectural Digest

Completed 2023. Los Angeles, CA.

A new kitchen and dining room wing and a new two-level carriage house complete with a guest flat and ground floor studio space are added to a 1939 late-Mission Revival former duplex. The new wing and carriage house use the existing building–now a single-family home–as an anchor to shape a hidden, flexible compound for family, play and work. Located in the Angelino Heights Historic Preservation Overlay Zone the design takes an additive approach to the site that treads carefully respecting the protected vernacular character in a way that is quirky and yet contemporary.
